FRANKFORT-ELBERTA

A&W: Take a trip back to the '50s where chili-dogs and frosted mugs of root beer are still served up by carhops at this all-American institution. Elvis has been known to make an appearance during their annual summer “A&W Cruise Night” in August, as do cars from the 50’s and 60’s that we remember well. At the bottom of the hill.

BETSIE BAY INN: Within this lovely inn are several dining venues. There's Bunty & JoJo's Restaurant which serves casual food, then Tantelle Fine Dining, the Hotspur Pub and two other venues for private parties.

CABBAGE SHED: Join the locals or meet up with the boating crowd at Northern Michigan’s version of Cheers. Whether for steaks, seafood, pasta, ribs or a mug of Fuller’s English Ale, a good time is guaranteed at this circa 1867 warehouse that once housed, you guessed it - cabbages! COHO CAFE: A great place to cool off after a day at the beach. Right on Main Street, famous for their tasty coho salmon cakes, served with a mango/tomato salsa. Dinner selections include sesame chicken, ribs, beef tenderloin kabobs, shrimp & veggie pasta and their specialty three-bean veggie chili. Also tasty appetizers than can be a meal, cappuccino, coffee blends and Italian sodas. Lunch $5-8.50, dinner $10-16, open 11am-3pm & 5:30-9 pm. Closed Tuesday nights.

DINGHEY'S: The place for BBQ ribs, full rack or half, slow smoked and smothered with a special sauce. They also feature a Friday night whitefish special and are known for their homemade twice-baked potato soup and tenderloin Caesar salad. Full bar and open year around, dinners run $5-15.

ELBERTA BEACH DINER: A real hometown diner, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with homemade, stick-to-your-ribs Polish dishes, like pierogies or the $6 lunch special Polish kielbasa, stuffed cabbage and potato pancakes. Featuring homemade HUGE pancakes that will rock your world! Daily sandwich specials and yummy homemade apple and cherry turnovers. Open daily 8am - 2pm and Fridays til 7:30pm.

THE MAYFAIR TAVERN:   Open daily for lunch and dinner. Pizza, burgers, soups and salads along with an extensive dinner menu.  The dinner menu features N.Y. strip, BBQ ribs, chicken, and seafood.

THE MANITOU: Casual upscale dining for the Crystal Lake cottage set and those enjoying the scenic drive along M-22, between Frankfort and Empire. Specializing in whitefish, trout, perch, choice steaks and lamb. Imported beer & wine. Call ahead for reservations, especially on weekends. Early bird menu 4:30-6. Pleasantly remodeled, but can be easy to miss, keep an eye out for it.

RHONDA'S WHARFSIDE: With a sweeping view of Betsie Bay from every table and freshly prepared, globally influenced cuisine, the traditional menu features meat, seafood and pasta, but is anything but ordinary. Try the tea-smoked duck or grilled pork chops seasoned with Szechwan pepper salt and topped with a spicy caramel sauce, and grilled rare yellow fin tuna, encrusted with fennel, cumin and sesame seeds. The Chef’s Risotto changes daily with the availability of fresh ingredients. A truly unique and memorable dining experience, open year around. The lower level café is open during the summer months.

VILLA MARINE: Come out on a Saturday night for their prime rib special, when the place is rocking with local bands, or stop by on Sunday for hearty steak, pancakes and eggs, all with a view of the boats in the bay. Located in the heart of Frankfort, they’re famous for their homemade clam chowder, hearty burgers, steak and shrimp scampi, marinated pork chops and 22 oz. Draft mugs. Dinners range $10-16, lunches around $5. Open year around, full bar.
