ISLAND BEAN COFFEE CO.: The tiny but friendly Island Bean brings fresh-brewed coffee, cappuccino, and espresso to downtown Harbor Springs, along with fresh bagels and muffins, and their delicious Panini sandwiches, grilled fresh with such ingredients as ham, provolone cheese, or dried tuna. Also at Island Bean are fresh-squeezed fruit juices and fruit smoothies plus their tasty chicken salad sandwiches with dried cherries - and the daily paper is always available for a quick read. MARY ELLEN'S PLACE: Just like a trip back to Andy Griffith's Mayberry, Mary Ellen's embodies the quintessential old-fashioned soda fountain, right in Harbor Springs. Sample the homemade soups and chili, thick malts and authentic fountain drinks, and Cokes from Mary Ellen's 60-year-old antique Coke machine; and don't miss their gigantic rack of periodicals, from local papers to comic books to glossy big-city mags. It's a must-see.

THE NEW YORK RESTAURANT: A refined atmosphere, subdued lighting, and an appetizing selection of epicurean treats awaits the diner at this Harbor Springs corner landmark. Menu selections range from their smoked whitefish ravioli appetizer to their Atlantic salmon, baked polenta and eggplant, tomato basil fettuccine, or filet mignon - and their brunches include one of the best versions of Eggs Benedict around.

NUTMEG'S FOOD & WINE: Take out or dine in at Nutmeg's, where you can choose from sandwiches and salads, take-home dinners, wines and micro-brews, or specialty coffees and bagels - they say that it's "where deli meets gourmet," and we say that it's all pretty darn good.

STAFFORD'S PIER RESTAURANT: A Harbor Springs favorite, "The Pier," as it's known locally, offers not one, but four dining options within the restaurant itself. The casual Wheelhouse Lounge, with its low tables and inviting fireplace, offers a flavorsome selection of coffee drinks, imported beers, mixed drinks, and wines, plus pub snacks (like their well-seasoned baked escargot) and interesting conversation. The Chart Room is a step more upscale, with cozy booths and great lunches, from soups to chicken. The Pointer Room is perfect for that special night out, with its harborside view, subtle service, and luxurious surroundings; menu choices range from Oysters Rockefeller to lobster, whitefish, rack of lamb, and filet mignon. And, behind The Pier and beside the docks, Dudley's Deck makes any afternoon fun with its umbrella-covered tables, succulent salads and sandwiches, the outdoor bar's fruity tropical drink selection, and visits from the neighborhood ducks.

TEDDY GRIFFIN'S ROADHOUSE: Solid fare just this side of gourmet, Teddy's features a wide variety of dinner entrees, all served with the restaurant's homemade and addictive "Ted Bread." Only a stone's throw from Boyne Highlands, indulge your appetite after golf or skiing with their Helix En Croute, Almond Crust Walleye, Mediterranean Angel Hair, or Reggiano Pesto Chicken - or, if it's a more relaxed snack you're looking for, step into Teddy's Pub for their hearty sandwiches or Irish pizza. Just like the sign above the door says, Teddy's has "better food than most hospitals"!

TURKEY'S CAFE, PIZZERIA & RESTAURANT: A hearty, friendly destination right on Main Street, Turkey's serves a delicious choice of breakfast and lunch items, and their pizza is a must-have. Also worth a mention are their legendary Calzones that arrive with a thick, chewy crust and your choice of three items, and their new casual gourmet dinners, which range from whitefish and chips to chicken alfredo and black bean burritos. Their new cocktail menu is also available - and don't forget to check out the snazzy collection of antique soda bottles on the walls. Dine in, takeout, or delivery.

CROSS VILLAGE

CROW'S NEST: Known as much for their area catering as for their restaurant service, the Crow's Nest menu includes appetizers like Sun Dried Tomato Bruschetta, entrees like whitefish, pork ribs, and walleye, and custom pizzas from Mediterranean to Zydeco.

LEGS INN: Famed for their atmosphere as much as for their Polish-theme menu, Legs Inn is quite a sight. The first thing you'll notice is the abundance of upside-down chair legs on the roof - and it only gets more interesting once you're inside. Sculpted logs engraved with strange faces, tables cut right from giant trees, and enormous stones make up the majority of Legs Inn's construction, and, if you can tear yourself away from browsing the surroundings, you'll find it hard to choose between the perogis and the other menu items. Legs Inn also offers blues and rock music on the weekends.
