Natural Health & Wellness Expo, 2007

March 7, 2007
In today’s society, many of us are unaware of the choices that we make every day – unconcious choices that affect our health. We buy groceries that contain harmful ingredients such as partially hydrogenated oils. We often choose surgery as an answer to a health problem, not knowing there might be another option. We take prescription drugs for ailments and then switch medications. We put up with chronic musculo-skeletal pain, sometimes resulting in impingement of a nerve or interrupted blood flow.
We chalk up our ailments to being over 30, over 40, or over 50 years old. And we make choices without considering alternatives.
Now that the baby boomer population is 45-60 years of age, the face of health care is changing. Choices made in the past aren’t working, and the focus is shifting to natural health care. Responsibility for one’s health is also shifting... the choice is inevitably ours.
A holistic approach to wellness treats the underlying cause, not just the symptoms. Optimally, good health means that our body is balanced and receiving full life energy. Imbalance is created when there is a blockage of energy in the physically, mental, emotional or spiritual body. It is when we are out of balance that health problems set in. Removing the blockages to energy pathways in the body allows natural healing to occur.

A Holistic Approach
With the various holistic modalities available such as chiropractic, kinesiology, bodywork, yoga, and homeopathy to name a few, the choices in themselves can be overwhelming.
A check up with a holistic medical practitioner can be a good starting place. Or a visit to a chiropractor for a spinal adjustment could lead to a referral for massage therapy for strained muscles. Kinesiology may result in a recommendation to detoxify the body and rebuild with proper nutrition.
Becoming informed and getting to know your own health is an investment. See yourself as a partner and an investor in your own health care and healing.

The Natural Health Network
In October of 2005, a small group of natural health practitioners gathered to take on a mission. That mission was not to change the face of today’s traditional health care system, but rather, to improve health in the community by raising awareness about natural health options.
Founded by Keli Macintosh, RN, CNC, and vaccination researcher Mary Tocco, the Natural Health Network of Northern Michigan originated with 11 professionals. From chiropractors to yoga instructors, bodyworkers to naturopathic doctors – a core group of natural health practitioners took on the mission: to serve as a network of resources for the public as well as practitioners to promote optimum well being.
The network is a not-for-profit organ-ization dedicated to building positive awareness about natural health choices. Now in its second year, the network offers to the public: mini presentations about various holistic modalities and products; a directory listing of natural health business members in the area; and its first annual Natural Health & Wellness Expo to be held April 21.
On Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the first annual Natural Health & Wellness Expo will be held at the Borgata Fitness Club located at 3031 Cass Road in Traverse City. The event is a collaboration between The Natural Health Network and The Center for Progressive Therapy.
Learn more about holistic approaches to wellness from a variety of exhibitors, experience free hands-on therapies in the Spa facility, or enjoy an organic beverage upstairs in the Coffee House.
