Savoir Faire

April 25, 2007
Want some European flair in your home without having to leave the country? Make the trip to Savoir Faire, located on Main Street in Bay Harbor, for one-of-a-kind home accessories. Whether you’re looking for pieces reminiscent of your travels, or home accents with a sophisticated feel, Savoir Faire has what you’re looking for.
Owner Karin Abel opened the boutique in May 2005, moving her 10-year-old store north from Birmingham.
“I’m kind of known for having unusual things that you don’t see other places,” says Abel, a graphic designer by trade who easily made the transition to interior design.
“It was somewhat of a natural progression,” explains Abel. “If you’re good, a designer can translate from a page to a room.” Interior design has more elements to work with, such as texture and lots of color, which Abel finds more challenging.
A variety of inviting displays in the store showcases Abel’s talent, as well as her taste for eclectic and classy items. Many clients request her design services after appreciating the look of the store.
“There are still pieces left from my travels to Europe,” says Abel, pointing to a buffet displaying her tableware line, as well as a few large pieces of furniture scattered throughout the store. Abel maintains the essence of her store by searching at length for unique items, as she no longer makes travels exclusively for the business.
“Usually when I order things, I only order them once,” says Abel. “When
you buy something here, chances are that your neighbor’s not going to have it in
their house.”

Framed prints and sconces cover the walls of the boutique, with a scattering of throw pillows, lamps, vases and other housewares placed throughout to give the place an elegantly comfortable feel.
Abel typically avoids brand-name items, selecting only those that speak to her and lend themselves to the style of
her store. Staples, such as the popular Juliska line of tableware, are the exception, sure to be requested on her newly offered bridal registry.
As a companion shop to Savoir Faire, a second store, Cottage, will soon be opened by Abel, next door. “It’s going to be more like a celebration of summer,” says Abel, “with an emphasis on casual summer living.” Cottage offerings will include bedding, tabletop items, napkins, and more tableware lines, with a focus on bright colors and summer fun guaranteed to keep extra cash in your wallet. Plans call for a Memorial Day weekend opening.
As sole owner and employee of Savoir Faire, Abel is definitely busy, but looking forward to the coming months. “The big push is unique home accessories,” declares Abel. “I’ll order (one item) and then we’re on to different things.”

Savoir Faire is located at 4245 Main St. in Bay Harbor. Store hours are Mon.-Sat., 10-5, Sunday, 10-3. Call 231-439-2614 for more information.
