Disheartened

While observing Fox News, it was disheartening to see what their viewers were subjected to. It seems the Republicans’ far right wing extremists are conveying their idealistic visions against various nationalities, social diversities or political beliefs with an absence of emotion concerning women’s health issues, children’s rights, voter suppression, Seniors, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid...

Things That Matter

All of us in small towns and large not only have the right to speak on behalf of our neighbors and ourselves, we have the duty and responsibility to do so -- and 238 years ago, we made a clear Declaration to do just that...

An Anecdote Driven Mind

So, is Thomas Kachadurian now the Northern Express’ official resident ranter? His recent factfree, hard-hearted column suggests it. While others complain about the poor condition of Michigan’s roads and highways, he rants against those we employ to fix them...

No On Prop 1

Are we being conned? Are those urging us to say “yes” to supposedly ”revenue neutral” ballot proposal 1 on August 5 telling us all the pertinent facts? Proposal 1 would eliminate the personal property tax businesses pay to local governments, replacing its revenue with a share of Michigan’s 6 percent use tax paid by us all on out-of-state purchases, hotel accommodations, some equipment rentals, and telecommunications...

Fix VA Tragedy

The problems within the Veterans Administration identified under former President Bush continue to hinder the delivery of quality health care to the influx of physically wounded and emotionally damaged young men and women...

Women Take Note

I find an interesting link between the Supreme Court Hobby Lobby and the crisis on the southern border. Angry protesters shout at children to go home. These children are scared, tired, hungry and thirsty, sent to US prisons awaiting deportation to a country where they may very likely be killed...

Proposed Airwalk Project, Kasson Township

We recently were made aware of the proposed “Air Walk Project” for Kasson county several months ago. Although we have only lived in this area since Nov., 2012, the main reason we moved here and established residence was that it was an area of natural beauty where one could enjoy the best of Michigan’s outdoor living. We are opposed to the Air Walk project because of its adverse impact on the congestion to the area, due to increased vehicle traffic, the additional road wear, and the accompanying trash and pollution, air, night light, and surface. The potential for increased night light pollution is assured as to operate a parking lot, restaurant, and outdoor night activities will require additional lights.

Eco-tourism has not been shown to protect the environment. It leads to environmental damage, loss of wildlife, congestion, and an influx of people who do not care about the impact of their visit nor do they have to live in the area full time and clean up the messes they leave.

Have we considered the effect the sky walk would have on the natural beauty of the area, i.e., a huge structure across the sky line? What about in the winter? What will the owners do with their sky walk and restaurant and other facilities in the winter? How will these influence the natural beauty of the area? If for some reason the business does not profit and the owners decide to close it down, what will then happen? Will we have a eye sore to deal with as they walk away? Will they sell it and if so, then what will be there? Who will pay for the increased road traffic and management of traffic? There are a lot of questions that need to be considered. Most of the scenarios will end with Leelanau county, i.e., primarily the residents of Kasson Township, having to clean up someone else’s mess and pay for it.

Let’s protect the Kasson Twp’s beauty and not allow it to be destroyed by presumed well meaning but harmful commercial ventures. The Air Walk project’s main goal will be profit for those who own it. Once here, they will place the natural environment second and profitability first.

Why Increase War Funding?

By the end of this year, the U.S. will have fewer than 10,000 troops left in Afghanistan. The U.S. won’t technically be at war with any country. So why does President Obama want to increase the amount of money our country allocates to war funding?

Christina Crawford, Traverse City

CORRECTION:

In the Project: ICE feature in our March 3 issue, we mistyped 1800 as the date that NOAA’s temperature records began; that date was meant to be 1880, and is of pivotal importance in regards to climate change issues. Additionally, in secondary editing after the article was submitted, producer/director William Kleinert’s name was misspelled repeatedly as “Kleinart,” and Express apologizes sincerely for this error.
