Breezing Through the Tunnel of Trees

Sept. 7, 2014

Twice a year, a sleek line of bicycles and brightly garbed riders snake northward through M-119’s winding turns and dense woods.

These ambitious cyclists are riding the Harbor Springs Cycling Classic, a trek that runs through M-119’s Tunnel of Trees, one of the most popular cycling routes in Michigan.

The fall edition of this year’s Cycling Classic is set for Sept. 13, with a trio of routes. All offer beautiful glimpses of Lake Michigan, farmland, horse pastures, and that jaw-dropping foliage.

Refreshment stops along the way and support vehicles provided by Touring Gear Bike Shop help keep the riders’ energy up, and an official lunch after the event supports cyclist camaraderie.

If you like to bike, this is one not to be missed.

Frank Shumway’s been at the helm of the Cycling Classic since 1990, when the Birchwood Inn teamed up with Touring Gear Bike Shop to put it together.

"We put each of our specialties to work to create the event," Shumway said, "and it’s all about the cycling: a healthy, low-impact sport that every age and ability level can enjoy."

The only really tough challenge, Shumway said, is the weather, although the Cycling Classic has had pretty good odds so far.

"This is a semi-annual event," Shumway said, "so of the 47 rides to date, our "˜sunshine dance’ has only failed three times."

Novice riders can try the 20-mile route, which remains fairly flat; intermediate riders will enjoy the 45-mile trek with what Shumway called "some decent hills"; and experts will be able to test their endurance with the 60-mile route.

"All you really need is a bike and a helmet," Shumway said. "Putting in a few miles on the bike beforehand would be a good idea, too."

The ride fee of $25 includes a route map, the refreshment stops with chocolate chip cookies, sag wagon service, and lunch. Cyclists must start between 7:30am-9am; the lunch ends at 3pm.

Birchwood Inn is the start, finish and lunch location, and is offering a discounted lodging package for riders.

"We always hear from participants about how nice the routes are, the low amount of vehicle traffic, and for those who stay with us, how much they enjoy the Inn," Shumway said.

"The spring ride starts the season rolling," he continued, "and then it all gets tied up with the fall ride in September."

"Which means it goes full circle," Shumway smiled. "Perfect."

The Harbor Springs Cycling Classic takes place on Sat., Sept. 13. For more, call the Birchwood Inn at (231) 526-2151 or visit birchwoodinn.com/specialevents/hscyclingclassic.html.
