Touring Michigan with Time and Luck

June 12, 2015

Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys is more than just a band. They occasionally break apart to take on a temporary side project or two. One of those projects is their duo, Time and Luck, touring Michigan’s northwest coast this month.

COOL COLLECTIVE

Lou and her fellow Flatbelly (and husband) Joshua Rilko are bringing along two other indie artists, Max Lockwood and John Driscoll, to round out their touring sound.

They met bass player Lockwood through their musical circle, including Michigan’s Earthwork Music Collective, and Driscoll was a tour mate of the Flatbellys a few years ago.

"Max is a fantastic singer-songwriter in his own right and recently released an album called "˜Outrider,’" Rilko said. "We’ll be performing some songs from that album on our tour. And John is a top-notch percussionist; he’ll be adding those skills and more to our duo ensemble."

WILD TIMES

The Flatbellys have a new album of their own – February 2015’s "Ionia" – their second full-length set and one that’s already snagging critical acclaim from both Michigan and Nashville press.

The Flatbellys will be touring in support of that album for most of this year, including a stint overseas. In a way, this duo tour is almost a kind of break for them.

"It gives us an opportunity to have a creative outlet outside of the band and to collaborate with other artists," Lou explained.

"Time and Luck is a special sound that the four of us have developed, although the duo itself isn’t necessarily a new project. Josh and I have been making music together since before the Flatbellys train shot like a bat out of hell into the wild!"

ECLECTIC SETLIST

Time and Luck’s tour is set to offer a diverse potpourri of tunes, some from the Flatbellys’ existing repertoire, some that Lou and Rilko perform as a duo outside of the band, and some new originals that are Time and Luck’s own.

"And, of course, you can expect to hear some covers from our favorite Michigan artists," Rilko added.

The only album the duo has recorded was released back in 2013, but after this year, they plan to cut down on Flatbellys road time (they’ve been playing 150-200 dates per year), so they hope another Time and Luck album isn’t too far away.

BACK ON THE TRAIN

For now, there are these northwest Michigan shows – a limited-time Time and Luck offer that will only present a quartet of fleeting dates before Lou and Rilko hop back on the Flatbellys train.

"Our duo’s name is actually a quote from a Kurt Vonnegut book," Lou explained. "To me, it represents that you never really know what’s around the corner. So, we do our best with work and love to affect the now, and then we put our faith in time and luck."
