Six New Hair Trends for 2016

Jan. 22, 2016

THAT’S KNOT FASHIONABLE

Knotted hair was another trend seen from a plethora of designers during runway season, mostly of the disheveled kind. Make a knotted bun at the back of your head and then undo it slightly, and you’ve got the look. It’s easy, but also semi-polished, as seen at Jason Wu via Allure, Edun, Lela Rose, Rachel Antonoff, and Rag and Bone.

DO THE TWIST

The ponytail is a go-to style for many ladies with long hair, but there’s only been so much you can do with it — until now. Public School unveiled their ponytail twist on the 2016 runway via hairstylists Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, as inspired by ‘80s singer Sade. It’s easy to do and well suited to city, small town or vacation, with an elastic at each end and plenty of style in between.

YOU’VE GOT TO KEEP IT DECORATED

Hair pulled severely back from the face is newly in vogue, as opposed to the tousled beachy looks of this past fall fashion season, but how to break up a look that can come across as a little too severe? Add a little whimsy, if you’re Dolce and Gabbana; the beginning of this quickly-catching trend was seen on their runway, with hair wraps and gloriously embellished headbands.

CHOP SHOP

While long hair remains on point, probably because so many of these hairstyles require long hair to work, mid-length hair is also returning. Not a pixie cut, not a shoulder-length bob, but right in between is where the smart girls (other than the long-haired ones) are aiming, complete with a thick bang a la model Peyton Knight; have it all chopped off straight across, leaving little room for error or regret.

FLOWER POWER

If decorated headbands aren’t enough for you, pull a Carmen Miranda and take things completely over the top with one of this year’s big flowered headpieces. Seen to maximum effect at Anna Sui’s show, the super-detailed renditions of flowers were echoed by other designers in their own ways via giant gauze blossoms, stacks of fruit or piles of frothy, flowery trimmed lace.

EMBELLISHED LINES

Have you run out of ideas for styling your hair? Then style where your hair is not. This unique trend helps you make something out of what is essentially nothing by lining your hair’s part with faux gemstones, ribbon or anything from a sprinkle to a giant splash of glitter.

We’re not guaranteeing that removing it will be much fun later, but you’ll definitely make a fashionable impression.
