Trump should avoid self-dealing President-elect Donald Trump plans to turn over running of The Trump Organization to his children, who are also involved in the transition and will probably be informal advisers during his administration. This is not a “blind trust.” In this scenario Trump and family could make decisions based on what’s best for them rather than what’s best for the country...

Trump the change we need?  I have had a couple of weeks to digest the results of this election and reflect. There is no way the selection of Trump as POTUS could ever come close to being normal. It is not normal to have a president-elect settle a fraud case for millions a couple of months before the inauguration. It is not normal to have racists considered for cabinet posts. It is not normal for a president-elect tweet outrageous comments on his Twitter feed to respond to supposed insults at all hours of the early morning...

Health care system should benefit all It is no secret that the health insurance situation in our country is controversial. Some say the Affordable Care Act is “the most terrible thing that has happened to our country in years”; others are thrilled that, “for the first time in years I can get and afford health insurance.” Those who have not been closely involved in the medical field cannot be expected to understand how precarious the previous medical insurance structure was...

Christmas tradition needs change The Christmas light we need most is the divine, and to receive it we do not need electricity, probably only prayers and good deeds. But not everyone has this understanding, as we see in the energy waste that follows with the Christmas decorations...

A story in last week’s edition about parasailing businesses on East Grand Traverse Bay mistakenly described Grand Traverse Parasail as a business that is affiliated with the ParkShore Resort. It operates from a beach club two doors down from the resort. The story also should have noted that prior to the filing of a civil lawsuit in federal court by Saburi Boyer and Traverse Bay Parasail against Bryan Punturo and the ParkShore Resort, a similar lawsuit was dismissed from 13th Circuit Court in Traverse City upon a motion from the defendant’s attorney. Express regrets the error and omission.

A story in last week’s edition about The Fillmore restaurant in Manistee misstated Jacob Slonecki’s job at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course. He was a cook. Express regrets the error.

No Place on Earth

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle We’re in places we don’t need to be staying longer than we need to stay. Some of it is a vestige of wars long over. We’ve got 50,000 troops in Japan, more than 53,000 in Germany and nearly 25,000 in South Korea. All three would seem capable of defending themselves.

Trump Benchmarks

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle Immigration and Customs Enforcement says there are currently about 11 million illegal aliens in the country. The Obama administration has deported 2.5 million people here illegally, more than any administration in history. Another half million have self-deported.

Time To Explore Alternatives

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle This all started because a developer wanted to put a nine-story building hard against Front Street. The proposal included the obligatory parking and some affordable housing units. What ultimately morphed into a charter amendment was opposition to that structure at that location.

Vote... Or Not

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle There’s a stark contrast between the major party candidates at the federal level, but none of them have much new to offer. Politicians claiming the sky will surely fall if we don’t elect them is hardly a new strategy.

Rigging The Election

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle

Donald Trump says this election is being rigged by the Democrats, the media and unnamed “global elites.” He says he won’t necessarily accept the election results in the event that he loses.

Let’s take a look at the likelihood of such a conspiracy.

Ballot Questions To Question

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle If you live in Traverse City, or outside the city but in Grand Traverse County, you will be making choices beyond candidates on November 8. There are three ballot proposals for the voters inside the city limits and an additional two millage questions for all county residents.

Interesting Election

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle We have a county commissioner race in which a Green Party candidate is likely to garner more votes than any Green Party candidate in memory. We have odd legislative races in which candidates from one district are ubiquitous, and candidates from the other are nearly invisible.

Our Money

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle The national debt is rapidly approaching a staggering $20 trillion. For those of you who enjoy zeroes, that would be $20,000,000,000,000. That’s our cumulative debt, the annual deficits stacked one atop the other until they’ve made a really big pile..

A Trump Presidency

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle He will round up and deport all 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the United States. Or he will round up and deport everybody but children. Or he will round up everybody but children and their law-abiding parents. Or he will identify, round up and deport all the criminal illegal immigrants.

If We Build Them...

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle The study by the University of Pennsylvania was especially salient since researches looked at smaller communities, too. They compared increased road capacity — new roads and the widening of existing roads — with traffic patterns and congestion. They discovered that traffic almost always increas es.

Speaking Of Speech And Forgetting The Unforgettable

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle Colin Kaepernick, the back-up quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers National Football League (NFL) team, has created a bit of a brushfire by refusing to stand when the national anthem is played prior to games. He says he’s protesting police violence against minorities. Several NFL players and other athletes have joined him.

Rising Tides

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle That sea levels are rising does not seem to be in dispute. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we’ve experienced an 8- to 10-inch sea-level rise in the last century, but the rate of rise is now increasing rapidly..

Land Deals And School Buses: Proceed With Caution

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle The basis of this is a “housing target market analysis” LandUseUSA completed in 2014 for Networks Northwest, an organization representing 10 counties in the northwestern lower peninsula. (It used to be called the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments.

The Fraud Of Voter Fraud

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle Donald Trump says if he loses in Ohio or Pennsylvania, both of which voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, it will be because of “rigged” voting. That makes him the first presidential candidate in memory, and maybe ever, making excuses for a loss months before the election takes place.

The Bug And The Elephant

Other Opinions Stephen Tuttle His father, James, was mayor of Traverse City and a state senator. His mother, Hildegarde, became the first woman in the city to hold elective office when she was elected to the school board. The couple had a rather large downtown department store that locals seemed to like.
