Tastemakers:Cherry Pie Whole Beer/Bacardi Arctic Grape

Rick Coates - July 4th, 2011
Cherry Pie Whole Beer
The breweries of Northern Michigan have taken the art of craft brewing to a “whole” new level as of late. Now, Right Brain have taken the cake, uh “the pie” with their latest creation.
Located in the Warehouse District of Traverse City, Right Brain Brewery just released their Cherry Pie Whole Beer, using 50 whole cherry crumb pies from the Grand Traverse Pie Company.
This actually is the second “pie whole” brew from Right Brain which launched the concept this past February with their original Pie Whole beer made with 75 carmel apple pies from the Grand Traverse Pie Company.
When asked why another pie beer? proprietor Russell Springsteen stated, “Why not? It makes sense and it was really fun the first time. Plus, Grand Traverse Pie Company has such a fantastic variety of flavors!”
This brew is lighter in style and lighter on the malt profile to highlight the natural local cherry flavors. It pairs well obviously with pies from the Grand Traverse Pie Company. It also works well with grilled chicken or salmon and BBQ ribs.
Look for the Right Brain Brewery Cherry Pie Whole Beer on tap at eateries that carry Right Brain or visit the brewery to enjoy a pint. So what’s next, Smoked Salmon Ale? How about making beer with a bunch of Great Lakes Chips? After all, chips and beer go well together. I am sure the brewmasters don’t need my input and I can’t wait for the next concoctions. Cheers and enjoy the National Cherry Festival. --Rick Coates

Arctic Grape

The hot item or maybe the “coolest” item at last year’s National Cherry Festival Beer Tent was the Bacardi Torched Cherry. Released just in time for its debut at the Cherry Festival the Torched Cherry mixed with lemonade was a definite hit. Now Bacardi is back with their latest flavored rum offering, Arctic Grape.
A combination of white grape and the tart taste of lingonberry, an arctic berry that grows in subarctic climates of North America and Asia, Bacardi Arctic Grape is available nationwide at $13.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Bacardi Arctic Grape may be enjoyed just over ice or with assorted mixers. Try the Arctic Refresh: 1 oz. Bacardi Arctic Grape Flavored Rum and 2 oz. Sprite poured over ice with lime. The Bacardi Arctic Grape Mojito is perfect on hot summer days: 3/4 oz. Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice, 3/4 oz. Simple Syrup, 10 each Mint Leaves, 1 ½ oz. Bacardi Arctic Grape Flavored Rum, 1 oz. Cranberry Juice, 1 oz. Top with Club Soda Muddle in a serving glass: lime juice, simple syrup, and 10 mint leaves. Fill with ice and add Bacardi Arctic Grape Flavored Rum and cranberry juice. Stir ingredients until mixed together. Top with club soda. Garnish with lime wedge and mint sprig.
The Bacardi Torched Cherry will be back this year with the addition of the Bacardi Arctic Grape, so ask for them when you check out the National Cherry Festival Beer Tent. Be sure to check out The Law Offices of Gerald Chefalo Beer Tent Stage featuring live music throughout the afternoon and happy hour. The beer tent is open from noon to 11 p.m daily. --Rick Coates
