Tastemakers: Tannery Creek Market/ Timber Ridge Microbrew Color Tour & Fall Festival

Rick Coates - September 27th, 2010
Tannery Creek Market
D. “The Meatman” Schultz has been an entrepreneur since graduating
from high school. He even did a stint as Mark Farner’s (Grand Funk)
manager. He decided eight years ago that his “last entrepreneurial
hurrah” would be to open an old style butcher shop in Petoskey. This
past spring the Tannery Creek Meat Market in Petoskey (in the former
Pizza Hut building next to the Side Door Saloon) marked its 5th
“I had been processing deer for 25 years and I had an operation where
I would go to area farms and slaughter cattle onsite for them,” said
Schultz. “So I started thinking about what I wanted to do next and
thought to myself, people are always going to need to eat, so I became
a butcher.”
Tannery Creek Meat Market has become legendary in the Petoskey region
and beyond with some customers traveling more than 100 miles. Several
restaurants also use their meats. His secret:
“We process all of our meats here in house and today more so then ever
this is important to people,” said Schultz. “People like knowing where
the meat is coming from.”
Schultz has been approached by other communities asking that he open a
second operation. “We are considering it, but there is only so much
time in the day and I have a golf game I am trying to work at.”
Tannery Creek Meat Market is open seven days a week and they always
have specials going on, plus Schultz says they are also willing to
“special order anything.” For more information or directions call them

Timber Ridge Microbrew Color Tour & Fall Festival

The owners of Timber Ridge Resort (southeast of Traverse City) have
been strong supporters of the Michigan microbrewed beers. Their
popular Suds & Snow event at the end of winter now has more than 1000
participants snowshoeing and enjoying the best Michigan has to offer
in craftbrews. A few years ago they added the Microbrew Color Tour &
Fall Festival. The event will take place this weekend with the primary
tasting event on Saturday, Oct. 2.
While the Suds & Snow event is open to the public, the Microbrew Color
Tour is open only to those staying on property. Now Timber Ridge has
put together some pretty lucrative packages for the weekend and all
pricing options are online. The weekend includes a welcome reception
Friday night from 5-7 pm and a shuttle bus afterwards to the Right
Brain Brewery in downtown Traverse City.
On Saturday, the day is free for exploring the trails and Timber Ridge
has trails for hiking and mountain biking and they connect up with the
VASA Trail and other state land trails. The official tasting event of
assorted Michigan brews starts at 4 pm on Saturday. There will also be
assorted local wines and music from Nick and Jason. Saturday night
includes a pulled pork dinner or vegetarian option.
