Historically Wrong In regard to Mary Keyes Rogers’ column about the downtown charter amendment, neither Samuel Adams nor Thomas Jefferson were at the Constitutional Convention...

The Film Possibilities I was surprised that none of the Traverse City Film Festival films addressed the most pressing and dangerous issue of the day: radical Islamic Jihad. Perhaps a storyline could have illustrated how the West brought this on themselves, or if we could only find jobs for those fellows! Perhaps put it down to global warming...

Helmets Save Lives The facts are in. Wearing a helmet is the most effective tool to save your brain in a motorcycle accident. The bonus? Helmets also save hearts. Nearly two yrs ago, on Aug. 26, 2014 our son lived...

Labels Unfair

This is in reference to the political and religious bantering we are hearing. As I listen and think, I am kind of offended. The labels of right wing evangelicals and left wing liberals and Democrats who are apparently not Christian etc. You see the categories?

I object to being cornered. How can the Catholics be offended by birth control when it seems acceptable to drink and smoke and have other vices which in turn cause death? How can the right wing conservatives get the market on Jesus and God? Do they too prescribe to drugs and alcohol and lust and greed and hatred to those unlike them?

I understand the moral code we are aspiring toward. But until all are ascending into the perfection realm we are all here learning about love. Isn’t love the universal solvent? Yes, love the person, brotherly love, but not the sin.

I am a Democrat who IS a Christian...

Calling all women...

Women have struggled for the right to vote in 1920, for equal pay for equal work, equity in upper management jobs, the resources to care for their families, fairness in health insurance coverage, and the right to make our health care choices.

Today, with the problems confronting our nation: jobs, debt, education, wars, shrinking middle class, etc., the Republican Party has focused its priority on restricting, devaluing and disrespecting our health care choices and rights as women.

The GOP platform bans abortion in the case of incest or rape. VP candidate Paul Ryan sponsored the “personhood” amendment which would ban in-vitro fertilization and some birth control.

Romney/Ryan both support plans to prohibit all Planned Parenthood funding, such as cancer screenings or birth control...

Act For the Future “What worries you, masters you,” according to John Locke. Anyone paying attention these days has plenty to worry about; things like endless war, accelerating climate change, lack of meaningful living-wage jobs, and internal threats to such rights as voting and privacy.

Retail Fairness Now Last year, the Senate passed the Marketplace Fairness Act, bipartisan legislation that would provide retailers in Michigan with a fair chance to compete with online sellers. In July, the Senate again made efairness a priority by introducing the Marketplace and Internet Tax Fairness Act.

Letter to Santa Dear Santa, I am sending my letter to you a bit early this year. The toy you sent me so very long ago is broken, and cannot be fixed. They used to make things better when I was still a kid. Too much plastic these days, it seems.

Blissfest Preview

Music Kristi Kates Count ’em: 36 years of Blissfest. That’s 36 summers out in the farmlands of Bliss, Mich., with dozens of acts each year in nearly as many genres, and around 5,000 music fans in attendance each day of the festival. So how tough is it for festival founder and guru Jim Gillespie to keep the fest fresh as we approach the 2016 event?.
