Truth About Inner City Violence It’s quite amazing how far off the mark someone like Stephen Tuttle can travel simply by ignoring all the elephants in the room.

Cold Not To Blame Regarding the opinion letter that we are not diversified in northern Michigan because of cold weather, here are the average highs and lows of each city from December through February: Traverse City December 32 and 15, January 27 and 14, February 30 and 14 Detroit December 35 and 21, January 31 and 19, February 32 and 18 Doesn’t hold much weight with me as a reason that African Americans do not feel at home “up north.”

Brainless Response, Provocative Article The May 25th editorial response by reader Jack Dancer couldn’t be more off the mark. He states that the reason there are not more African-Americans living in Traverse City is because it’s too cold?

Not So Black And White The article “Why...so white?” in a recent issue is a very simplistic approach to considering the notion of diversity in our region.

War!

British invaders overwhelmed Mackinac 200 years ago this week

Features Patrick Sullivan

British soldiers didn’t take Mackinac Island entirely by surprise 200 years ago, though they may as well have.

When the British invaded on July 17, 1812, they found the Americans unprepared because news of the war had not yet reached this frontier outpost, even though President James Madison had declared war on the British a month earlier.

Letters 11-03-2014

Letters Cherish Your Right: Americans can be assured and proud of the way elections are conducted in the United States. Laws and policies provide guidelines and rules which assure that elections are honest and results are accurate.

Land Swap Respectful To Native American: My wife and children are proudly Native American, so our family cares deeply about tribal culture and heritage. We are pleased to know that my employer, St. Marys Cement, has completed an archaeological study in conjunction with the proposed land swap in and next to Fisherman’s Island State Park.

Peace Be Upon Him …a Question: Mr. Obama tells us that Islam is not at war with the United States, and we can “reset” to a new, kinder, gentler, more productive relationship with the Moslem world. We’re also told that religion is not an issue between the people of Islam and the sinful people of America. “Politics is the issue,” he tells us.

Support Our Children: Education is paramount to a vibrant and thriving community. Our schools are some of the best in the state offering worldclass education opportunities in pre-k through 12th grades including two high schools recognized as “top high schools in the nation”, Advanced Placement and early college courses, International Baccalaureate and Montessori programming, fully funded early childhood for those eligible, and, athletic and fine arts programming second to none.
