Less Ageism, Please The January 4 issue of this publication proved to me that there are some sensible voices of reason in our community regarding all things “inter-generational.” I offer a word of thanks to Elizabeth Myers. I too have worked hard for what I’ve earned throughout my years in the various positions I’ve held. Now That’s an Escalation I just read the letter from Greg and his defense of the AR15. The letter started with great information but then out of nowhere his opinion went off the rails. “The government wants total gun control and then confiscation; then the elimination of all Constitutional rights.” Wait... what?! To quote the great Ron Burgundy, “Well, that escalated quickly!”

Thanks to Claire Scerbak for her perspective on utilizing tax payer money for education and family services. I have utilized services at Planned Parenthood and all the services I have benefitted from included education and family services.

My spouse and I received our HIV education in order to get our marriage license there. I got my reproductive health care, including birth control and care and follow up when I was diagnosed with precancerous lesions...

Best of NM 2012 When Short’s Brewing Company produced those first 178 barrels of beer in 2004, they must have known they were on to something special. Since then, production at their Bellaire brewpub and now the Elk Rapids brewery has grown exponentially, along with the popularity of the brand.

Northport Brewing’s First Season Exceeds Expectations

Dining Ross Boissoneau Scott and Pamela Cain are taking Northport back in time by moving their business forward. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, most small towns boasted their own breweries. With the post-war boom of mass production techniques, these small breweries eventually closed due to large scale competitors, but over the past decade, tiny towns all across the country—and especially across Michigan—are once again embracing the idea. Now Northport is catching on to the microbrewery trend with the opening of Northport Brewing in late June 2014.

Something Rare Brewing at Rare Bird

Rare Bird, indeed. At most brew pubs, women are found behind the bar, taking orders or cooking. Not many women are brewers in the burgeoning world of craft beer, but that doesn’t mean there couldn’t—or shouldn’t—be more. An early pioneer on the Traverse City brewing scene was Kim Schneider, head brewer at North Peak several years ago. Schneider moved on and currently crafts beer at a downstate brewpub.

Now, brewer Tina Schuett has taken the beer-making baton and run with it.
