Safety on the “Bridge to Nowhere” Grant Parsons wrote an articulate column in opposition to the proposed Traverse City pier at the mouth of the Boardman River. He cites issues such as limited access, lack of parking, increased congestion, environmental degradation, and pork barrel spending of tax dollars. I would add another to this list: public safety...

Vote Carefully A recent poll showed 84% of Michiganders support increasing Michigan’s renewable energy standard to at least 20% from the current 10%. Yet Representative Ray Franz has sponsored legislation to eliminate the standard. This out of touch position is reminiscent of Franz’s opposition to the Pure Michigan campaign and support for increased taxes on retirees....

Credit Where Credit Is Due I think you should do another article about the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund giving proper credit to all involved, not just Tom Washington. Many others were just as involved...

I’ve Changed My Mind The Supreme Court has determined that states cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions. This has happened with breathtaking suddenness. It took 246 years for Americans to decide that slavery was wrong and abolish it, but it’s been only a couple of decades since any successful attempt was made to legalize same-sex marriage, and four years since a majority of the American public supported legalization...

$20,000 hospital stay There was a 23-hour stay at the hospital. Afterward, we received a bill for over $20,000. There’s not much to say except we make just enough to not qualify for Medicaid, but can’t afford the best insurance...

I immediately thought of my own marriage of 23 years between a postmenopausal female and a vasectomy recipient...

Irritating comment As a foodie in a foodie area I was enjoying the “Best of” issue and making plans to visit some new and exciting restaurants when I came across “You know you’re from Northern Michigan when...”. I was looking forward to the usual chuckles about snow, Subaru’s and the usual whatnot when I came to the whenism “Everyone is white.”

Opposing biodiversity “Natural diversity in ecosystems provides essential economic benefits and services to human society—such as food, clothing, shelter, fuel and medicines—as well as ecological, recreational, cultural and aesthetic values, and thus plays an important role in sustainable development.”

-- Chevron’s Biodiversity Statement, April 2012, http://www.chevron.com.

Sadly, our representatives in Lansing reject such science-based wisdom...

Correction: Please note, it was Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak named the Best Athletic Gear Shop in Leelanau County in our recent “Best of Northern Michigan” issue. An editing error mangled the shop’s name. Also, it was A. Papano’s Pizza chain that won “Best Restaurant Staff and Pizza” in Benzie County.

Here and There, But Not Everywhere

Features Patrick Sullivan Cooney is no marijuana booster, however. He believes pot’s wider acceptance has led to an increase in use among high school students. And he notes that most people with medical marijuana cards are under 40 (the average age is 27) — indicators, he believes, of abuse of the law.
