Man Has Environmental Responsibility

I tend to agree with Thomas Kachadurian (“Playing God,” Sept. 8) that we should not interfere with the power of nature by deciding what is “native” and what is not. Man usually does what is better for man (or so we believe), hence the survival and population growth of our species...

The Bush & Obama Facts

Don Turner’s letter to the editor on 8/25/14 stated that there has never been a more corrupt, dishonest, etc. set of politicians in the White House. He states no facts, but here are a few...

Ban Pesticides

I grew up downstate in a neighborhood without pesticides. I was always very healthy. Living here, I have become ill. So I did my research and found out a lot about these poison agents called pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers, etc) that are being spread throughout this community, accumulating in our air, water and soil...

Respect for Presidents?

Recently we read the Letter to the Editor that encouraged us to stop characterizing President Obama as anything other than an upstanding, moral, inspiring “first Black President”. The author would have us think that the rancor in the press, media and public is misguided. And, believe it or not, this rancor is a “glaring exception to … unwritten patriotic rule” of historically supporting all previous presidents...

Most Eclectic Gift Shop

Get gifty at Nifty!

Best of NM 2012 It’s the moment when your palms begin to sweat, your eyes become crossed and every clock is screaming at you. You glance at the greeting card isle at the grocery store and think/hope, a card will suffice. Then, a cheap, stuffed animal at the gas station catches your eye.

Experts Weigh in on Petoskey’s Big Hole

Back in 2006, 200 E. Lake Street – a gateway address with jawdropping views in downtown Petoskey – was poised for change.

Features Kristi Kates A proposal had been approved for a new development called Petoskey Pointe, and there was a grand plan swirling around to turn the block into a multimillion dollar hotel, condo, parking, and restaurant project that some said would revitalize the Gaslight District.

“W” Stands for Winter at Petoskey’s Latest Fest

Features Kristi Kates Not wanting to disappoint the public, Goodman and her team decided to be straightforward about it. So today, it’s simply the Petoskey Winter Festival, although the goal of cheering up the winter doldrums is the same. “Only the name has changed,” Goodman said.

New Downtown Living

Features Patrick Sullivan Petoskey’s downtown is also built out, and prices of old homes close to the center are going up, even if they aren’t in great condition. A red hot market for in-town real estate and a lack of space to build has taken away a lot of what builders or remodelers can do, said agent Lori Jodar of Lori Jodar & Company.

The Gaylord Renaissance Plan

Features Kristi Kates

Gaylord’s downtown area has long relied on the friendliness of its people and quaint “Alpine Village” theme to draw visitors to the downtown area, while providing locals with a neighborly place to shop and do business.

But over the past several years, downtown Gaylord has been suffering, both economically and aesthetically. So the Gaylord Renaissance Plan was formulated, an idea that’s actually been in the works since the late 1990s, but is only now starting to gain a foothold.

Open Carry

Our confusing gun laws, weapons in schools, and “packing” at Burger King

Features Anne Stanton Shoppers might stare, wondering, “Is he ready to open fire or just making a gun rights statement? Am I safe? Should I run?” In this hypothetical case, the man might have bought the semi-automatic rifle from a neighbor with no background check or borrowed it from a friend.
