Religious Bigotry President Obama has been roundly criticized for his apparent unwillingness to use the term “radical Islamic terrorism.” His critics seem to suggest that through the mere use of that terminology, the defeat of ISIS would be assured...

TC DDA: Focus On Your Mission What on earth is the Traverse City DDA thinking? Purchasing land around (not within) its TIF boundaries and then offering it at a discount to developers? That is not its mission. Sadly enough, it is already falling down on the job regarding what is its mission. Crosswalks are deteriorating all around downtown, trees aren’t trimmed, sidewalks are uneven. Why can’t the DDA do a better job of maintaining what it already has? And still no public restrooms downtown, despite all the tax dollars captured since 1997. What a joke...

European-Americans Are Boring “20 Fascinating People” in northern Michigan -- and every single one is European-American? Sorry, but this is journalistically incorrect. It’s easy for editors to assign and reporters to write stories about people who are already within their personal and professional networks. It’s harder to dig up stuff about people you don’t know and have never met. Harder is better...

Be Aware Of Lawsuit While most non-Indians were sleep walking, local Odawa leaders filed a lawsuit seeking to potentially have most of Emmet County and part of Charlevoix County declared within their reservation and thus under their jurisdiction. This assertion of jurisdiction is embedded in their recently constructed constitution as documentation of their intent...

More Parking Headaches I have another comment to make about downtown TC parking following Pat Sullivan’s recent article. My hubby and I parked in a handicap spot (with a meter) behind Mackinaw Brew Pub for lunch. The handicap spot happens to be 8-10 spaces away from the payment center. Now isn’t that interesting...

Demand Change At Women’s Resource Center Change is needed for the Women’s Resource Center for the Grand Traverse Area (WRCGT). As Patrick Sullivan pointed out in his article, former employees and supporters don’t like the direction WRCGT has taken. As former employees, we are downright terrified at the direction Juliette Schultz and Ralph Soffredine have led the organization...

Intentional Act or Drunken Negligence?

Mystery still shrouds hit and run death of Kellyann Boyce Hurlbert

Features Patrick Sullivan Police reached over 400 tips in the case of the July 5 hit and run death of Kellyann (Boyce) Hurlbert, but all of that information from the public so far hasn’t helped investigators get any closer to solving the case.

Letters Real Support for Single Moms

The ad for the strip club in the June 9 issue was pretty terrible. “Supporting single moms one dollar at a time” is cruel and belittling to the women who have no other option but to strip for a living to feed their kids...

Letters Gas vs Wind

I would like to refute the statistic quoted in Richard Denneaus’s letter in the June 2, 2014 Northern Express. He states that “....the cost to produce electricity from renewable sources is at least double our current costs.”...

What is that giant sucking sound?

It is not the sounds of jobs leaving our country due to the one-way trade agreements. There is not much left of decent jobs to be sucked away. The sucking sound I am referring to is caused by the vacuum of leadership in Lansing...

The Kenny Loggins You Don't Know

Music Kristi Kates

Kenny Loggins is kicking off August by heading to the Odawa Casino Resort in Petoskey for a live concert. Loggins, formerly one half of country duo Loggins and Messina, is best known for his hit title track to “Footloose,” a 1984 movie that starred Kevin Bacon.

The 2014 Women of Rock

Music Kristi Kates While the field of women in rock typically turns over more slowly than that of the men (many female artists hold onto their crowns from year to year with few surfacing to challenge them), this year’s list is a pretty solid mix of stalwarts and newcomers.

Letters

Thanks For Thanksgiving Nice “Thank You” letter by Stephen Tuttle [in the November 24 edition]. Good idea.

Don’t Give A Dog or Cat! The holidays are “the most wonderful time of the year,” but they aren’t a wonderful time to add a new dog, cat, or other animal companion to the family. That’s why it’s important to resist the temptation to give a living, breathing animal as a “gift.”

2014: The Year in Modern Rock

Music Kristi Kates and it was an instant hit… Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Fest launched an international version in Paris with Chvrches, Mogwai and James Blake… Gwen Stefani duetted with Adam Levine on a new Maroon 5 song… OK Go played twice in Michigan this month, at...

Invasion of the '80s

Features Kristi Kates

One is a San Francisco glam-punk band whose stage presence includes flashing sunglasses, platform shoes, wild stage antics and questionable lyrics. The other is an alternative power-rock outfit from New Jersey who favors black T-shirts and got its name from a Yosemite Sam catchphrase.

Opposite coasts, and most definitely contradictory approaches to being a band, but you’ll hear similar sounds because they both crafted some of the most familiar songs of ’80s rock radio, which is probably why they’ve hit the road together for their 2015 Rock of the ’80s Tour. They’re making a stop at the Little River Casino Resort this weekend.

Benishek’s Forgotten Flint Once again, our savior Rep. Dan Benishek wants to remind us how much he cares about us. In his latest newsletter, Benishek cries about the “abuse of power and disregard for the Constitution” by President Obama’s administration and the burdensome regulations...

Parsons Right About Schools Regarding last week’s column about why schools close, Grant Parsons speaks truth to power! He speaks for me...

The Benefits Of Medical Marijuana I recently attended a free showing of “Ride With Larry” film at the Bay Theatre, which was sponsored by Parkinson’s Network North and Leelanau County Senior Services. It was a film about an amazing man with Parkinson’s who biked 300 miles across South Dakota to raise awareness about living with Parkinson’s...

More About Kachadurian Columnist Tom Kachadurian’s recent fit to slash out at the world of science and scientists is just another example of his profound ignorance and shallowness...

Love Wins Wow! Donald Trump scares me! He is a nasty individual who has the one thing that makes him dangerous…money! If he becomes president, the U.S. will be completely destroyed. It is already in serious trouble...

The New Normal Fifty more gunned down. They say it was a gay bar. Remember “saloons” had a connotation of a specific “type” of entertainment. Today, bars are simply social meeting places for all walks of life...
