Sturgeon River Winter Float

Features Mike Terrell The silence was deep and golden as we glided along at times under branches of overhanging cedar along the river. Snow covered the banks and helped illuminate the darkly wooded shoreline. The only sound was the gurgle of rushing water as it swept along the gravelly riverbed and around fallen trees and submerged logs.

The Mighty Microbrew and Music Fest Returns

Features Kristi Kates “When we did our first summer microbrew fest [in 2009], people loved it,” Porter said. “That’s why we started the winter one – from people saying, ‘That was great, you need to do something like that again, and soon!’” Porter chose a relatively slow weekend in TC for the winter version of the event, which is expected to bring 4,000 people downtown.

200-plus Brews; Brandi Carlile at Microbrew Fest

A simple idea – pairing local microbrews with live music – has exploded into something spectacular in Traverse City.

Bigger than ever, the fifth annual Traverse City Microbrew and Music Fest has a 200-beer menu, hotter bands, enormous tents, and a full-on light show to cap it all off.

“These things are what move me,” said organizer Sam Porter. “We love this event, and it brings so much good to the community.”
