Stop The Games On Campus

Four head coaches – two at U of M and two at MSU – get a total of $13 million of your taxpayer dollars each year. Their staffs get another $11 million...

The Truth About Fatbikes

While we appreciate the fatbike trail coverage, the quote from the article below is exactly what we demonstrated not to be true in most cases last season...

Man Has Environmental Responsibility

I tend to agree with Thomas Kachadurian (“Playing God,” Sept. 8) that we should not interfere with the power of nature by deciding what is “native” and what is not. Man usually does what is better for man (or so we believe), hence the survival and population growth of our species...

The Bush & Obama Facts

Don Turner’s letter to the editor on 8/25/14 stated that there has never been a more corrupt, dishonest, etc. set of politicians in the White House. He states no facts, but here are a few...

Ban Pesticides

I grew up downstate in a neighborhood without pesticides. I was always very healthy. Living here, I have become ill. So I did my research and found out a lot about these poison agents called pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers, etc) that are being spread throughout this community, accumulating in our air, water and soil...

Respect for Presidents?

Recently we read the Letter to the Editor that encouraged us to stop characterizing President Obama as anything other than an upstanding, moral, inspiring “first Black President”. The author would have us think that the rancor in the press, media and public is misguided. And, believe it or not, this rancor is a “glaring exception to … unwritten patriotic rule” of historically supporting all previous presidents...

Indian River motocross Count me as one of the “whine asses” who is very concerned about the consequences of a large motocross racetrack (think 30-40 two-cycle dirt bikes, trucks, or snowmobiles per race), with races from Friday to Sunday, not counting practice times. Add camping sites for thousands of RVs or tents, and day parking accommodating 20,000-plus fans...

Boozers a bummer A recent letter bemoaned the fact that one can’t imbibe on restaurant patios in Boyne City. Good for Boyne City...

Preaching discrimination In response to the letter, “Yahweh’s view on gays” from Gordon Lee Dean from Troop 10 (6/24), I do believe you have a right to your views and religious beliefs. However you need to understand not everyone who attends Boy Scouts is affiliated with Christianity...

Boy Scouts & Christians Yahweh did NOT write the Bible - fallible humans did (re: “Yahweh’s view on gays.”) Scouting doesn’t teach “Christian morals” it teaches citizenship, leadership, sharing, healthy conservation and outdoorsmanship, and hopefully, morals are a by-product...

Fracking or nuclear? I’m sympathetic to Peggy Case’s letter (“Time to ban fracking,” June 17), but the current move to ban coal and push wind means more gas-burning turbines to pick up the load in the lulls. More gas turbines means more fracking, not less...

Letters Michigan's kleptocracy

As one of his first official acts, Governor Snyder picked the pockets of Michigan retirees by taxing their pensions and retirement savings. He then lined the pockets of his corporate backers by reducing business taxes...

Food stamp cuts

Yes, that would be the real “Hunger Games” (I’ll credit the movie for my title to avoid a Rand Paul plagiarism charge)...

Racetrack woes

The Indian River Racetrack issue has unfortunately very much divided our community, literally pitting neighbor against neighbor...

Say no to the racetrack

As the “baby” cousin of the fabulous, extended Willman family, I am expressing our collective, resounding NO to the prospect of a racetrack facility on Griswold Mountain in Indian River...

Destructive plan

About 80 years ago my grandfather built a cottage near Indian River that he named North Haven. He, my grandmother, and their five daughters spent every summer with the woods and waters. Those daughters in turn faithfully brought their nine children back to the cottage for long visits...

Creepy condition

I read with amusement the Detroit Free Press article on “The Elf On The Shelf” named Michael who watched children’s every move before heading to the North Pole each evening to report directly to Santa on each child’s misadventures...

Special interest scandal

I’d like to thank Michigan law enforcement for putting the brakes on the Republicans' attempt to make AT&T more profitable at the expense of constituents by discontinuing land line service...

A taxing subject

In Michigan we have huge income from various sin taxes. We have a tax on alcohol, on nicotine addiction (tobacco), and income from gambling on the lottery and video poker machines. When marijuana is legalized here, as it is in the state of Washington, we will have a tax on that. What we don’t have is a tax on sex...

ACA Has Benefits

I hear people bashing the Affordable Care Act and wonder why they like the old plan better. The ACA: Covers preventive screenings like blood pressure, diabetes and cancer screenings free of charge without a co-pay or deductible...

We Are Clean

The artist in the “A Door Closed, A Window Opened” in the March 10 issue is a nice looking woman with some interesting jewelry creations. However, her assertion that “we” come to God “broken and dirty: and then somehow get ‘cleaned up’ by him” is a rationale I find offensive and ridiculous...

Oppose Griswold Racetrack

When it comes time for Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners to make a decision regarding the conditional rezoning of Griswold Mountain, I hope they will show the same amount of professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment as their own Planning and Zoning Commission has already demonstrated...

Ban Pesticides

Lawn pesticides (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides etc.) are poisons that kill insects, weeds and organisms. Numerous studies show them to also cause cancers, birth defects, autism, infertility and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities)...

Uncap Social Security

I agree with Mr. Don Semen’s letter from the March 24 issue. I see no reason to have a cap on income taxed for Social Security. People who have income greater than $110,000 can most afford it and it would help keep Social Security and Medicare healthy.

Volunteer Thanks

During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 6-12, the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM) pays tribute to the dedicated and generous individuals that volunteer with our organization...
