More About Kachadurian Columnist Tom Kachadurian’s recent fit to slash out at the world of science and scientists is just another example of his profound ignorance and shallowness...

Love Wins Wow! Donald Trump scares me! He is a nasty individual who has the one thing that makes him dangerous…money! If he becomes president, the U.S. will be completely destroyed. It is already in serious trouble...

The New Normal Fifty more gunned down. They say it was a gay bar. Remember “saloons” had a connotation of a specific “type” of entertainment. Today, bars are simply social meeting places for all walks of life...

Time to split atoms

Across the country, slick sales pitches are being made for wind power. The irony is that those salesmen are working for the natural gas industry. When the wind dies down, something else has to power up; that something is usually a gas turbine burning natural gas, which is the only sort of power plant being built these days.

All those Ontario wind farms are backed up by a gas-burning plant you don’t see; gas burners mean gas buyers and gas buyers mean fracking. Salesmen know which side their bread is buttered on.

If we want to stop burning things to make electricity, our best option is also the most-vilified and least-understood: nuclear energy...

Letters The roots of violence

At a recent Forum on Gun Violence there was not a lot of talk about violent video games and movies, but panelists mentioned them as a factor. In my opinion as a retired pediatrician and adolescent and family psychiatrist, one result of the obsession with violent video games by young people is the loss of ability to talk and resolve problems...

Senate sends a message

The Michigan Senate passed a package of bills Oct. 22 that will restrict where people receiving public benefits can withdraw cash from ATMs using their Bridge cards...

They’ll be missed...

Ten years ago this summer, Bronwyn Jones started purchasing food from our Leelanau County Sweeter Song Farm and giving that fresh, healthful food to the Women’s Resource Center. Bronwyn’s idea evolved into the mission for the Fresh Food Partnership: buy locally grown fresh food at a fair market price for our neighbors in need...

Corporate America I talk to David and I get this insurance BS. I talk to Mike and I get this Microsoft BS. Talk to John and everything is BS. My sister too with the insurance BS. Corporations have taken over, and control so much. Is everything a conspiracy? I believe so, more than ever before...

What Can Be Done I may or may not be a Sanders fan, but does Stephen Tuttle somehow imply that Sanders’ numbers don’t work out but that the other candidates’ numbers do? We have been financing the government on the backs of our children for decades, both Republican and Democrat administrations...

The Homeless Situation The writer of “The Homeless Situation” letter recently portrayed the liberal community as an ill-suited group to address the needs of the homeless, though he expressed gratitude to the church community for their efforts. Is it not possible to be a liberal and a member of the faith community? These groups are not mutually exclusive...

Obamacare Is Working Premiums for plans sold in the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace increased 6% this year nationwide. In fact, according to a recent Record-Eagle article, 5 out of 21 companies selling individual insurance plans in Michigan did not raise prices at all this year. Contrast this with the 15 years prior to the Marketplace being established, when annual increases for my individual insurance policies ranged from 13 percent to well over 20 percent...
