Fresh & Unbiased I have always enjoyed reading the Northern Express to discover all the cool things happening in our region. However, as the time went by, the level of left wing bias became more evident.
Racism Continues Even before the United States was an official nation, we were a country that practiced slavery. We are a country of slavery for more years than we have been not.
Rich Get Richer The other morning NPR said that GM had so much money the board of directors bought back $5 billion in stock.
Welfare for the rich
One often sees in the media signs by the Tea Party calling Obama a socialist. Our socialistic policies began with the New Deal with its subsidies during bad economic times. Since then our economy has improved, but the subsidies continue to this day. For example, every $1 of profits earned by corn sweeteners costs consumers $10, and every $1 of profits earned by its ethanol operation costs taxpayers $30.
In 2011 the Tea Party was the reform party. Earmarks were blocked in the 2011 budget because the Tea Party insisted upon it. There is an Office of Congressional Ethics, the only independent watchdog ensuring that members live up to ethical rules because the Tea Party insisted upon it...
Where our money goes
There was once a frequent public service announcement on the radio, asking parents, “Do you know where your children are?” With cell phones, that is far less of a concern now. It’s time to change the announcement to “Do you know where your money, personal and taxes, has gone?” Walking away from a cashier, we don’t think twice about our spending and the consequences.
Your taxes buy death as do many of your purchases. Your taxes buy inhumanity to others, degradation, starvation, and worse...
It’s been almost five months since someone took a saw to an orchard in Garfield Township and wasted 428 cherry trees. The search for the culprit or culprits has gone cold, despite a $10,000 reward in the case. Three other cases of orchard or vineyard vandalism have also gone unsolved in Leelanau County. In two of those cases, 15 cherry trees were cut at one orchard and 22 at another. At a vineyard, someone destroyed 161 grapevines. What’s partly stymied investigators is how strange these acts of vandalism are...
Citizens vs. PACs
I believe American citizens, not superpacs and billionaires, have the constitutional right to elect our President, Congress, and Judges. The Citizens United vs. FEC ruling by the Supreme Court gives corporations including multinationals, foreign entities, and unions the constitutional right to spend unlimited funds to oppose or support a candidate without disclosing who is giving, how much, and to whom.
Because Citizens United says money is the same as speech, superpacs allow individuals to do the same. Those who donate the most money win the votes of the politicians. This is destroying our democracy!
Average citizens across Northern Michigan trying to voice their concerns to their legislators can be overwhelmed by the corrupting influence of outside billionaires and corporations who donate unlimited amounts of money.
As a citizen of this country that I love, as a mother and grandmother, I believe we have a right and a responsibility to elect the best legislators who will safeguard and advocate for our family, community and country...
On Sunday at the NMC BBQ in T.C., a small group of activists were there to collect signatures for our petition to qualify for the November ballot to end Cannabis Prohibition here in Michigan.
It was a bust because we were forced by campus security (backed up by Traverse City police) to leave ASAP or be arrested. We setup across the street from campus, but only got about 50 sigs of an anticipated 1,000. Both campus head of security and a T.C. cop told me that they were being forced to remove us by certain college board members.
We were even told that if we stayed on grounds after putting away my back-pack sign (that drew folks to us) & clipboards, without purchasing a meal, we would be arrested for loitering...
What constitutes probable cause? This is one of many questions that has been going around in my head since my house was raided last Wednesday!
Last Wednesday should have been a celebratory day in my life. My boyfriend had just bagged a trophy buck and it was the eve of my birthday. My festive spirit was quickly halted when I received a call from TNT informing me that they were at my house. When I returned home from work, I found many police cars and officers at my house. My boyfriend was being detained in a police car, and officers were going through my personal belongings. I found out later that the officers busted into my house, and had held my boyfriend and house guest at gun-point.
I was told that based on two tips from informers and my boyfriend’s history, they felt just cause in raiding my house, instead of knocking on the door and politely asking, which they said was the usual protocol!
One of the informers told police that my boyfriend, Zach, had an illegal marijuana grow room and was manufacturing marijuana. The second informer, which was a recorded citizen tip, stated that Zach was selling crack-laced joints. Both of which were lies!
Zach told the officers as soon as they entered that there was a grow room. The room belonged to me, and I had my medical marijuana card. They proceeded anyway. If there had been an investigation, why didn’t the officers know this bit of crucial information before they came into my house? They found no evidence of illegal substances! They also found no evidence of any type of sales. They found nothing out of the ordinary, except a few immature plants over my limit and a few pills with no prescription attached.
The medical marijuana laws are “milky.”
Although there is a limited number of plants allowed, what really constitutes as a plant? The few that were removed from my house were small immature plants that contain no THC.The point to my letter is why did the police feel justified in raiding my house...
