Paging Doctor Dan: The doctor’s promise to repeal Obamacare reminds me of the frantic restaurant owner hurrying to install an exhaust fan after the kitchen burns down. He voted 51 times to replace the ACA law; a colossal waste of money and time. It’s here to stay and he has nothing to replace it.
Evolution Is Real Science: Breathtaking inanity. That was the term used by Judge John Jones III in his elegant evisceration of creationist arguments attempting to equate it to evolutionary theory in his landmark Kitzmiller vs. Dover Board of Education decision in 2005.
U.S. No Global Police: Steven
Tuttle in the October 13 issue is correct: our military, under the
leadership of the President (not the Congress) is charged with
protecting the country, its citizens, and its borders. It is not charged
with performing military
missions in other places in the world just because they have something
we want (oil), or we don’t like their form of government, or we want to
force them to live by the UN or our rules.
Graffiti: Art Or Vandalism?: I walk the [Grand Traverse] Commons frequently and sometimes I include the loop up to the cistern just to go and see how the art on the cistern has evolved. Granted there is the occasional gross image or word but generally there is a flurry of color.
NMEAC Snubbed: Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council (NMEAC) is the Grand Traverse region’s oldest grassroots environmental advocacy organization. Preserving the environment through citizen action and education is our mission.
Vote, Everyone: Election
Day on November 4 is fast approaching, and now is the time to make a
commitment to vote. You may be getting sick of the political ads on TV,
but instead, be grateful that you live in a free country with open
elections. Take the time to learn about the candidates by contacting
your county parties and doing research.
Do Fluoride Research: Hydrofluorosilicic acid, H2SiF6, is a byproduct from the production of fertilizer. This liquid, not environmentally safe, is scrubbed from the chimney of the fertilizer plant, put into containers, and shipped. Now it is a ‘product’ added to the public drinking water.
Meet The Homeless: As someone who volunteers for a Traverse City organization that works with homeless people, I am appalled at what is happening at the meetings regarding the homeless shelter. The people fighting this shelter need to get to know some homeless families. They have the wrong idea about who the homeless are.
Look, I have been in the oil and gas business all my life and I am 43. This is the only business to be in where I am from, much like cheese or fishing in Wisconsin. I am not some rich guy either; I live payday to payday like most Americans, praying I will have a retirement or my kids a college fund.
Here is what I have learned: Accidents happen i.e. BP's GOM spill and many others. This happens in every business including nukes in NY. People make mistakes and things we don't want to happen do. They tried logging all the trees out of just about every state that has logging before coming to an agreement that pleased almost everyone. We can do the same here. Most any company I have worked for in the 25 years aren't out to destroy the environment and in fact most do whatever necessary to protect it. That is why they have such high standards about spills and such. The have HSE departments to look after those kinds of things to make certain people are following their own restrictions and guidelines. To make sure EVERYONE is safe. They replant grass and trees and donate money for wildlife and schools and all sorts of other things and are mostly good for the economy. There are some bad ones, but for the most part they are conscientious. They want people to be safe.
They have secrets because if they didn't every oil and gas company would steal any chance to learn the same info without having to pay for it though the same trial and error processes. So one company spends 40 million to find gas and how to get then another company steals their info and does the same for 10 million. You guys believe they should give everything up. Well, how about all the cheese producers outline their process and ingredients online so I can produce cheese and compete against them without having to do any of the hard work. How about the fisherman tell me when and where and how to catch fish so I can compete against them. Wouldn't quite be fair would it? That is all the oil companies are asking that their info stays confidential. If they could give it up without their competitors getting it then they would be happy to do so.
The company I work for has clients tell us all the time "this is tight hole" meaning this is confidential and don't share the info. They are not hiding anything from anyone except competitors.
I drilled in Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico and there are a few places I would not care to work again simply because the people aren't very nice. I am sure most of those rude people are Christians as well to make the most sense of things. If it were up to me I would give the states exactly what they ask for. You don't want us drilling there then we would leave the state and cut off all petroleum including propane, natural gas, gasoline and diesel then you guys could see how long you can live without it in today's time. I bet it wouldn't take long before you would want us drilling there again. Cutting 12-14 cords of wood a year for everyone to heat with and riding a horse or bootlegging gas in at $25 a gallon and there would be a public outcry to start drilling everywhere.
Most all of the things they are doing there they have done elsewhere already either off shore or in another state. They did wildlife studies in Wyoming to see if drilling on the Pinedale Anti-cline in the winter hurt animal migration. After 10 yrs they found it was ok. On federal land in Texas as well as everywhere else I have worked the operating companies put down plastic either in 2 layers or one covered with dirt so even if there is a spill it never goes anywhere. You guys need to do more research on what goes on instead of just hollering "Stop Drilling" and "Stop Fracking".
Not to mention the people put out of work if we were to stop. Let' stop making cheese and just import our cheese in this country and let's stop eating meat so we can let all the cows turn free because it just isn't humane to pen them up and steal their milk or kill them. If there were a group to start that campaign you guys would be in line to choke them for messing with your livelihood. Now you are messing with mine, but you can bet you won't go without my product. Everyone wants to complain about someone else's industry until someone is complaining about theirs. Just my 2 cents.
BTW I said cheese as an example and I am not quite sure what the GDP for Michigan.
