A Big Push for Land Protection in Leelanau

Fresh on the heels of a massive lift to preserve the former Sugar Loaf ski area, the Leelanau Conservancy is trying to close the gap on their biggest fundraising campaign in the organization’s history. They are $9 million off their $75 million goal for their “Leelanau Protected” efforts, with funds going toward permanently protecting natural lands and farmland, ecological restoration, and access to natural areas through expanded and enhanced trail systems and outdoor experiences. Per a press release from the conservancy, Leelanau Protected dollars have already gone to the aforementioned Sugar Loaf project and expanded the Kehl Natural Area. Next on the docket is protecting Suttons Bay Forest, a 184-acre natural area nestled between the Village of Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau that is available for a “bargain” sale.
