Tastemakers: Stone House Bread - New Holland Brewery

Stone House Bread
After years as a successful journalist and news anchor Bob Pisor traded his pen and microphone for an apron and an oven. This past weekend he and his wife celebrated the 10th anniversary of Stone House Bread in Leland.
What started out as a simple goal of making “An honest loaf of bread,” has become a fixture in Northern Michigan. When anti-bread guy and diet guru Robert Atkins passed away, Pisor simply notified his customers of the news with bumper stickers that read, “Atkins is dead, pass the bread.”
While Pisor is known for his sense of humor, it has been his passion for quality versus his quick wit that has loaves of his bread flying off area store shelves. Stone House Bread represents everything that is wonderful about living in Northern Michigan: simple, fresh and relaxed. Take a look at any Stone House loaf or baguette and it really looks relaxed,. Take one bite and that relaxing feeling comes over you. There are several options to choose from such as the Asiago Cheese and my personal favorite, the Kalamata Olive. Grab your favorite olive oil pour on a plate add your favorite spices. Then soak it up with a few slices from the Kalamata loaf and wash it down with a glass of Chateau Fontaine Chardonnay for the perfect autumn afternoon hors d’oeuvre.
When visiting their Leland store try the Pesto Foccocia with roasted red peppers. Martha Ryan behind the counter is also part of the Tastemakers Customer Service Hall of Fame.  Stone House Bread is distributed throughout Northern Michigan; just ask for it at your favorite market.

Ichabod (Pumpkin Ale)
Okay, so in recent weeks Bottoms Up has been all about apples. Certainly there are other autumn harvest items that make great beverages. Grapes are an obvious one. But what about those big old orange things? That’s right, pumpkins are not just for carving and pies -- they also make great beer.
New Holland Brewery proves this each year with Ichabod, their delightful ale made with pumpkins. Now, before you turn up your nose to a beer made with pumpkins, erase those thoughts of the gooey gushy pumpkin innards you pull out when carving. Instead, think about that warm pumpkin pie topped with fresh whipping cream that Grandma serves every Thanksgiving.
With hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and ginger in the nose and palate this ale is a combination of Grandma’s best gingerbread man cookie and pumpkin pie all in one. New Holland has a definite seasonal winner with Ichabod.  This brew will be a great accompaniment at your Halloween party; pair with venison and apple chutney.  Serve during the Lions game on Thanksgiving Day so you are to be assured of enjoying at least one winner. Beer in general typically doesn’t pair well with pumpkin pie; Ichabod certainly is the exception.-- Rick Coates
