A Festive Welcome

A Festive Welcome…

September 14, 2006

Dear Friends:

It is an honor to welcome you to the first annual Festival of the Senses.

This unique assortment of festivals, events, concerts, and exhibits in the Grand Traverse area will treat your senses and sensibilities to the cultural treasures and culinary creations of this bountiful region. You’ll delight in the artful and whimsical collections in galleries and museums. You’ll tap your toes and sway to the selections of a world-class symphony, Southern rockers, and Scottish roots musicians. Or better yet, you can treat your taste buds to gourmet cuisine prepared by local chefs and to award-winning wines crafted by local vintners.

I personally invite you to stay and play a while in this gem among Michigan’s crown jewels of getaway destinations. Nestled among the gently rolling hills of northwest Lower Michigan’s wine-growing and fruit-bearing region, the Grand Traverse area is a favored place to live and one of the top vacation destinations in the Midwest. You can’t help but fall under the spell of the magic of its setting, its warm hospitality, world-class facilities, and diverse cultural offerings.

On behalf of the organizers of Festival of the Senses, I want to thank the many sponsors of this groundbreaking event and the countless businesses, organizations, and volunteers who have come together to create this showcase of festivals. It takes people just like you to create the positive changes that make great things happen in our communities and in our state.

Again, welcome to Festival of the Senses. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your efforts and my very best wishes for a successful and rewarding event.

Sincerely,

Jennifer M. Granholm
Governor

Welcome to the first annual Festival of the Senses!

Whether you are a visitor or a resident to this beautiful region known as Traverse, you will find several opportunities to stimulate and tantalize your senses.

The Festival of the Senses is a collection of several events that truly showcase the cultural lifestyle of northern Michigan. While we celebrate this for eleven days beginning Thursday, September 14 and ending Sunday, September 24 we live it year round. Our area is loaded with world-renowned artists, chefs, musicians, winemakers and other creative types who generate
a “festival-of-the-senses” everyday in northern Michigan.

The backdrop of our region serves as the perfect easel of creativity and inspiration for all who choose to craft their “works” whether culinary, musical, visual or from the vine. This same landscape offers a bounty of opportunity for the outdoor enthusiast as well.

The Festival of the Senses is essentially a “Stone Soup” of events, a collaborative community effort by those who “create, make and play” as their profession and lifestyle. Each event and activity is independently planned with organizers throwing their ingredient into the pot to create “one gigantic celebratory soup.”

The result is a chance to “taste” the regional flavors from area chefs and restaurants; to “smell” the aromas of the local vineyards; to hear the “sound” of homegrown music; to “see”
the works of area artists and performers and to “touch” the physical beauty of the region.

On behalf of the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Traverse Area Arts
Council and the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners - the “Chefs of the Festival”- I welcome you to this feast of the senses. There is truly something for everyone and plenty of opportunity to quench your thirst and satisfy your cultural appetite over the next 11 days. Take time to visit
the website www.festivalofthesenses.org for a complete listing of happenings.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for September 13-23, 2007 when the Second Annual Traverse Region Festival of the Senses will take place!

Sincerely,

Richard A. Coates
