Tastemakers: Sweet Shop - Sam Adams‘ Chocolate Boch

The Sweet Shop
Handmade Chocolates

Medical experts continue to tout the health benefits of chocolate. Chocolate stimulates the secretion of endorphins, creating that “runners high” feeling and has serotonin that acts as an antidepressant. For years chocolate has received a bad rap from dentists, but actually scientists have found that chocolate is among snack foods least likely to contribute to tooth decay, since it contains phosphate and other minerals. As for it causing acne- that is another myth. Chocolate contains a number of nutrients, as it is high in potassium and magnesium, and contains several vitamins - including B1, B2, D, and E.
So with Valentines Day around the corner, make a stop into The Sweet Shop located in downtown Cadillac. The Sweet Shop is a chocolate lovers paradise with over 100 selections, and they continue to produce their candies in their kitchen the old-fashion way - “One piece at a time.” Paul and Helen Beardsley were candy icons in Cadillac, operating The Sweet Shop for 25 years before selling the store to their daughter and son-in-law Janeen and John Russell five years ago. While they produce many chocolate delights, their signature is the Cadillac Snowbirds - white chocolate and Geogian pecan pieces ”cooked to perfection.” Snowbirds are a tribute to the many area residents who migrate south each winter. Another popular item is their molded chocolates. They have a wide variety of molded candies, from assorted animals, sports, characters, jobs and vehicles. Cadillac is a community on an economic upswing with several unique shops and dining options in downtown; it is definitely worth a visit. Make sure that stop includes a visit to The Sweet Shop. If you are unable to get there before Valentines Day, check out their website for ordering options; www.sweetshop4u.com or call them at 888-775-8880.

Sam Adams-Chocolate Bock

A recent trip through the Leelanau Peninsula led to a stop at the Cedar City Market. Northern Michigan is loaded with these cool markets that offer all sorts of unique provisions, and in typical Phil Thiel fashion, there is always something worth checking out in his back cooler. Tucked way in the back I discovered a bottle of Sam Adams Chocolate Bock. Brew-preneur Jim Koch has always been on the cutting edge since he launched his Boston based microbrewery 23 years ago. He created a Cherry Wheat using cherries from the area 15 years ago. Around that same time, he released Triple Bock, a beer so thick with maple notes that people pour it over their pancakes or ice cream.
So a few years back Koch created Chocolate Bock, blending the best hand selected Tettnang Tettnanger and Spalt hops with chocolate from the famed Scharfeen Berger Company. “This is a true South German bock,” said Jim Koch.“A big, malty, more alcoholic, warming, rich bock.” The beer is sold in a wine size bottle and should be enjoyed with friends, and served in a big redwine glass at cellar temperature. Pair with hearty foods, such as elk or roasted duck. It works great with Asian cuisine and desserts with fruits.Try a “Tanned Cherry” in a Stout glass. Pour a half glass of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat carefully, without creating a head (tilt the glass a lot). Using the backside of a spoon (just above the Cherry Wheat), slowly pour Chocolate Bock so it layers on top of the Cherry Wheat. Sip slowly and enjoy.
