Liberty & music

Considering the disgrace of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and the Justice Department under the Bush administration, a concert supporting the ACLU couldn’t come at a better time.
The benefit concert is “Music that Moved,” to be held on Saturday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Insideout Gallery in Traverse City. The evening will feature songs from the labor and civil rights movements, performed by nationally-renowned folk artist Trina Hamlin, along with Michigan musicians Julie Beutel, Celeste Headlee and Reverend Robert Jones.
Proceeds will benefit the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) in a rather unique way: join the ACLU and you get in for just $5.
The ACLU of Michigan is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works in the courts, legislature, and at the grassroots level to enforce the Bill of Rights and advance its principles.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM
“Advocating for civil rights and liberties doesn’t have to stop at the courts or in the legislature -- it can also be done in a concert hall with a microphone and an acoustic guitar,” said Kary Moss, executive director of ACLU of Michigan. “The ACLU is thrilled to have such a talented group of artists stand up and celebrate freedom with us.”
This is the second in a series of benefit concerts with Trina Hamlin that will tour Michigan. Last year’s concert in Detroit drew hundreds of music fans and civil libertarians.
“This is the perfect time and place to re-visit songs about change and raise awareness about a great cause,” said Hamlin from New York City. “Last year’s concert was so much fun that we decided to take the show on the road for the ACLU.”
A reception with light refreshments will begin at 6 p.m. with the concert starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the ACLU of Michigan website,
www.aclumich.org.
ACLU members may purchase tickets online for $25. Tickets for non-members are $35, or become a member of the ACLU and get in for $5. A limited number of tickets will be for sale at InsideOut for $35.
