4Play: Squeeze, Stand, Them Crooked Vultures, DropKick Murphy‘s

Squeeze - ArgyBargy (Deluxe Edition Remastered) - A&M
Originally released in 1980, Squeeze’s ArgyBargy spawned more than a
few now-classic tunes penned by the gifted Difford-Tilbrook team, and
this two-disc remaster does decent justice to the pep and vigor of
these pop songs. The first disc contains the original album, which
includes landmark Squeeze tracks “Another Nail In My Heart” and “If I
Didn’t Love You,” plus bonus tunes and B-sides including “What the
Butler Saw” and “Farfisa Beat.” Disc two adds to the retro fun by
offering up the band’s Hammersmith Odeon show from March, 1980.

Stand - 100,000 Ways to Harvest Hope - Paper Scissors Rock
Recorded in a mere nine days at the Goo Goo Dolls’ studio in Buffalo,
NY, Irish pop-rockers Stand’s 5th studio effort melds social
consciousness and positivity with the band’s sharp yet warm dual-vocal
attack, adding heft and pop appeal to their songs. “Generation Me”
offers a wry warning on today’s over-media’d social scene, while
“Nature My Mother” mourns environmental issues; “Stuck in My Shoes”
offers a pretty, acoustic break, and both “Olivia” and “The Living
Kind” prove to be melodic rockers that should make Ireland proud.

Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures - Interscope
Members of Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin make
up the conglomeration that is Them Crooked Vultures, which features
QOTSA’s Josh Homme on vocals (for the most part) and a solid baker’s
dozen of multi-versed rock songs. Opener “No One Loves Me and Neither
Do I” changes up the tempo halfway through, befitting the mood-
swinging lyrics; “Bandoliers” features a catchy instrumental hook that
plays well with the vocal line; and “Gunman” throws a little disco-
dance beat into the mix to wrap up an interesting set.

Dropkick Murphys - Live on Lansdowne - Dropkick Murphys
DM’s St. Patrick’s Day concerts have become legendary in their
Massachusetts hometown, and are now available again for home listening
in this new CD/DVD release, as recorded in 2009 (a nice pairing with
their 2002 live set.) Of course, the energy’s not quite the same as
their raucous live shows, but it’s not bad for a recording; most of
the songs are from the band’s last three albums, including “Tessie,”
“Fields of Athenry,” “Your Spirit’s Alive,” and “Shipping Up To
Boston” - and all capture the band’s enthusiasm and pure rawk.
