Computer waste

Nov. 6, 2002
Computer waste
What should a responsible person do with their electronic relics?
Recycle them at Grand Traverse County‘s Computer and Electronics Recycling
Event on November 9 in Traverse City.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 4.3 million tons of
electronic waste was discarded in 1999. They project that 63 million more
computers will require disposal by 2005. At present, 75% of our electronic
waste sits piled in basements and attics awaiting better disposal options
than the local landfill.
Residents who want to “do the right thing“ by recycling their old computers
and electronic equipment must make a reservation to attend the collection.
A $5 fee per item will be charged in order to help cover the cost
of shipping and recycling the equipment. Call the Resource Recovery hotline
at 922-2052.

The morning after
Planned Parenthood Northern Michigan (PPNM) is trying to raise awareness on the “morning-after pill” or post-coital emergency contraception (EC), which can reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. A workshop on the use of EC will be held Thursday, November 7 at 7 p.m. at both the Planned Parenthood Northern Michigan (PPNM) health centers in Petoskey and Traverse City. Call 231-347-9692 ext. 15 (Petoskey) or 231-929-1844, ext. 26 (Traverse City) to register.

She‘s honored
Hats off to JoAnna Kolodziej, a professor of early childhood education at North Central Michigan College, who was honored last month with an Educator of the Year award by the Michigan Occupational Deans Administrative Council. JoAnna has been on the NCMC staff since 1979. She is the mother of three and has been active in many causes for the benefit of children in the Petoskey area.
