Heidi Mikula‘s Cherryopoly

July 5, 2006
“Monopoly” continues to be the number one selling board game in the world. It is sold in 80 countries and produced in 26 languages. It has also produced several offshoots. Over 2,500 versions of the game exist from Elvisopoly to Sponge Bobopoly to just about everything
in between.
Traverse City resident Heidi Mikula researched the game genre and noticed that Cherryopoly had not yet been created, so she set out last year to create her own slice of Monopoly mania.  In all, more than 30 local businesses jumped on “board” (Great Wolf Lodge, Leelanau and Old Mission Wineries, Mabels, Wuefel Park). The game is played like regular Monopoly, yet it has a local flavor to it.
Cherryopoly debuts this week and is available at the National Cherry Festival souvenir tent or the Traverse City Visitors Center (both are on the corner of Union Street and the Parkway). Cherryopoly tournaments take place Monday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 5 with the championship matches on Friday, July 7.
The games are expected to sell quickly. Mikula says “not to worry if they sell out – I will do a second run.” Expect that, as everyone knows that seconds are a must when enjoying cherries. For details visit www.cherryfestival.org
