Ice Storm Closures Linger

While the March ice storm can feel particularly far away when we’re in the midst of 80-degree temps, sunshine, and summer humidity, the storm’s damage is still affecting northern Michigan. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that “roughly 60 percent of DNR-managed trails in the region remain temporarily closed” and over “1,200 miles of state forest roads remain impassable.” The good news: The DNR has been working for months to clean up and reopen other public access areas, including “19 state parks, 54 state forest campgrounds and 162 boating access sites.” To see places still closed or impacted by the storm, visit michigan.gov/dnr/about/newsroom/storm-recovery. And DNR staff remind us to be aware of leaning trees, broken branches, and other debris that could cause hazards while we explore the great outdoors.
