Making the Theater Accessible

Stuff We Love
Oct. 12, 2024

Interlochen Center for the Arts has a new way for attendees to engage in the performing arts. Instructor of Theatre Laura Mittelstaedt has created an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Snow Queen that has been specifically designed for accessibility. The show includes an ASL interpreter, sound cues and house lights lowered to 50 percent, large print programs, and a safe space to enter and continue to watch/listen to the show with monitor and speakers. Noise and/or light sensitivity accommodations can also be made if requested. Best of all, the show is free! Catch The Snow Queen in the Phoenix Theatre Oct. 18-20. Mittelstaedt is also taking the show on the road to schools in northern Michigan, including Glen Lake Elementary, Mill Creek Elementary, Betsie Valley, Lake Ann Elementary, and TCAPS Montessori.
