Did you know that Gaylord is home to a herd of 60 elk, the official mascot of Otsego County? And that there are places around the city where you can see them, including a new location in the updated Aspen Park with a fully accessible viewing platform? Head over this fall to see the busy season for the elk, when the bulls grow their massive antlers and strut their stuff for the females. September and October is the best time to see them, as they’re very active during daylight hours—and the bulls may even get into a headlock or two! This herd is maintained by the city and grew from just three elk from a shuttered nature preserve back in the 1980s, while wild elk are often spotted in Pigeon River Country State Forest.
